RIVERS OF ICE

PRATT MUSEUM HOMER, ALASKA OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2019

MY ARTIST STATEMENT:

My fascination with glaciers began in my youth while visiting Portage Glacier near Anchorage. That experience now serves as a reminder of the dramatic changes that have taking place in the Alaskan landscape during my lifetime. I find the act of painting to be a passage to understanding my own experiences.

When I began this exhibit, my focus was on capturing the deep, translucent colors of the ice . But when I started painting, I became interested in creating a personal record of what I saw and felt during my visits to several Alaskan glaciers.

Across our warming world, our living glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. This July, a ceremony was held at Okjokull glacier in western Iceland. A commemorative plaque was laid to mark its disappearance. The plaque reads:

“OK is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it.
